DESCRIPTION:ARRAY presents “Landings: Sowers on Screen” a film program centering documentary works by and about Black\, brown and Indigenous communities and farmers\, exploring relationships to land as sources of survival\, resistance and liberation despite struggles against environmental racism. Our 1:30PM showtime features: \nEARTH SEED (2024) | Film by Fox Nakai\, Jocelyn Jackson and People’s Kitchen Collective \nLed by People’s Kitchen Collective\, EARTH SEED centers a pilgrimage through California from present-day Los Angeles to Mendocino Woodlands that happened from March – June 2023. The traveling group visited with people and places building models for survival and our collective future. Rooted in Octavia Butler’s Parables series\, the legacy of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense\, and the diaspora of the global south\, EARTH SEED enacts radical hospitality as a survival practice. \nPlease note: Other showtimes in the day’s program require a separate ticketed entry. Working in the narrative and non-fiction artform\, her work seeks to depict the complexity of everyday life by examining themes such as personal histories\, alienation\, and cultural modernization. By utilizing observational techniques and poetic language\, her films lyrically weave together frameworks of race\, class\, culture\, and family lineage. She also works as a cinematographer on films such as THE DEBUTANTES (Tribeca ‘24)\, THIS TIME\, THIS PLACE (Tribeca ‘21)\, and Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar’s academy award-winning film AMERICAN FACTORY 美国 工厂 (Sundance ‘19). \nShyne was the recipient of the 2021 Artist Disruptor Award from the Center of Cultural Power. Her debut feature SEEDS has received institutional support from Sundance\, Black Public Media\, Cinereach\, ITVS\, IDA\, Doc Society’s Threshold Fund\, Just Films | Ford Foundation\, BAVC\, The Flies Collective\, The Puffin Foundation\, The Points North Institute and SFFILM. The film has also participated in the inaugural PROGRESSIO lab in conjunction with ICA London and Cineteca Madrid\, True/False’s PRISM program\, Open City’s Assembly Development Lab\, and the Catapult & True/False Rough Cut Retreat. She is an alumna of the Chicken & (Egg)celerator Lab and was a Firelight Media Documentary Fellow (2020-2022). Shyne received her MFA in Documentary Media from Northwestern University and a BFA in Motion Pictures from Wright State University.

She seamlessly directs films and television across genres\, from her latest action thriller\, G20\, starring Viola Davis\, to her Sundance success LA MISMA LUNA\, the Sony Pictures box-office hit MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN\, starring Jennifer Garner and GIRL IN PROGRESS featuring Eva Mendes. For THE 33\, the gripping drama about the Chilean miner rescue starring Antonio Banderas and Juliette Binoche\, Patricia spent 30 days shooting underground in real mines. Regardless of genre\, scope\, or medium\, she brings humanity to every character and story she tells. \nBetween feature films\, Patricia directs pilots and episodic television for major networks and streaming platforms. Notably\, she directed multiple episodes of the Emmy-winning drama DOPESICK\, starring Michael Keaton\, as well as the action-packed first season of Tom Clancy’s JACK RYAN. \nPatricia studied film at Columbia University’s School of the Arts. Her first short film won a Student Academy Award\, a Student Emmy\, and a Mexican Academy Award. Her second film\, a documentary about photographer Gordon Parks\, won the Jury Prize at Sundance. DESCRIPTION:ARRAY brings Mexican Mother’s Day to our Creative Campus with a curated selection of provocative films showcased as part of “Cine Con Corazon: Cinema Celebrating Mothers.” Our 3PM showtime features: \nCHICANA (1979) shown with A CRUSHING LOVE (2009) | Directed by Sylvia Morales \nCHICANA traces the history of Chicana and Mexican women from pre-Columbian times to the present. It covers women’s role in Aztec society\, their participation in the 1810 struggle for Mexican independence\, their involvement in U.S. labor strikes in 1872\, their contributions to the 1910 Mexican revolution and their leadership in contemporary civil rights causes. Using murals\, engravings and historical footage\, CHICANA shows how women\, despite their poverty\, have become an active and vocal part of the political and work life in both Mexico and the United States. \nA CRUSHING LOVE\, Sylvia Morales’ sequel to her groundbreaking history of Chicana women\, CHICANA (1979)\, honors the achievements of five activist Latinas—labor organizer and farm worker leader Dolores Huerta\, author and educator Elizabeth “Betita” Martinez\, writer/playwright/educator Cherrie Moraga\, civil rights advocate Alicia Escalante\, and historian/writer Martha Cotera—and considers how these single mothers managed to be parents and effect broad-based social change at the same time. \nPlease note: Other showtimes in the day’s program require a separate ticketed entry. Guests must RSVP and possess a ticket for each screening time to attend each of the screenings. \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nSylvia Morales has directed\, written\, produced and edited award-winning and nationally recognized film and video work for over 30 years. She directed episodes from the three seasons of Showtime’s groundbreaking series “Resurrection Blvd\,” working with actors Elizabeth Peña\, Lou Gossett\, Jr.\, Michael De Lorenzo and Esai Morales. She also wrote and directed for the Showtime series “Women: Stories of Passion.” Morales was one of the producing and writing team members for the award-winning series “Chicano! The Mexican Civil Rights Movement” for PBS. \nShe directed for the ACE and Emmy-nominated six-hour series “A Century of Women\,” which focused on 20th century U.S. women for Turner Broadcasting. Ms. Morales headed the Latino Consortium at KCET in Los Angeles from 1981–1985. She was responsible for the programming\, production and distribution of programs that aired on PBS. During her four-year tenure at KCET\, Ms. Morales hosted the Latino Consortium’s weekly national series “Presente\,” and produced and directed Emmy-nominated and award-winning programs. \nMs. Morales produced\, directed\, shot and edited the widely recognized film CHICANA in 1979. She has received the prestigious Rockefeller Fellowship Award in Media; participated in the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women; was a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts; received the VESTA Award honoring the outstanding contribution of Southern California women to the arts; and was honored with a Salute to Latinas Award for distinguished work in her field from the City of Los Angeles. She was also honored by Comisión Femenil Mexicana Nacional’s 20th Anniversary celebration for “Latinas in Film and Television.”

DESCRIPTION:Step into Marooning Bodies\, an experimental world building game that invites us to gather\, imagine and create together. During this game\, we will move through a series of activities involving writing\, drawing and discussion within a group to collaboratively build a model of a future society. Guided by artist and creator Mims\, we’ll explore what it might mean to build a community grounded in collective care\, shared responsibility and new possibilities for living together. No special skills or experience is required. Come with an open mind; ready for discovery. This game experience will last approximately 3 hours. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nMims is an artist\, abolitionist\, and facilitator based in Los Angeles. Her work spans performance\, advocacy\, public art\, social practice\, and the creation of fine art objects. She experiences the body as a site of liberation and approaches it as her first place of inquiry. Grounded in embodied knowing\, her practice explores relationships between self\, community\, land\, and more-than-human life. She is deeply interested in questioning as a tool for collective understanding\, the role of interpersonal relationships in building healthy communities\, and the sacred wisdom held in cultures and ecosystems around the world. \nShe is the founder of Marooning Bodies\, an immersive world building game and artistic ecosystem rooted in maroon histories\, biomimicry\, and communal imagination. She is also the creator of Uncle Ronnie’s Room\, an installation and advocacy project centering her uncle’s incarceration and the collective labor of abolition. \nMims’ work has been supported by the California Arts Council\, Converse\, LA County Department of Arts and Culture\, NYU’s Center for Ballet and the Arts\, and residencies in Senegal and Ghana. \n\nARRAY @ PLAY is a summer storytelling series to spark your sense of play through game and films as a tool for strategy\, connection and community-building. Hosted on ARRAY’s Creative Campus. \n\n\nOur July program brings together an interactive world-building game followed by a short film showcase to explore how we claim space\, forge new pathways and shape the communities we call home. Through collaborative gameplay\, we’ll gather\, imagine and create visions for a new world together. The accompanying films ground these themes in lived experience\, from one person’s pursuit of surfing as an act of healing\, to an intimate portrait of a vibrant inner-city neighborhood through the eyes of everyday residents. Through the transformative power of big wave surfing\, Tre’lan confronts his trauma\, embraces healing\, and discovers the resilience to reshape his future and find peace in the ocean’s most powerful waves. \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER:\nJessa Williams is an award-winning director\, producer\, and creative entrepreneur based in Los Angeles. Her directorial debut\, MOVING MOUNTAINS is a short film about her partner Tre’lan Michael\, one of the few Black big wave surfers in the world. Celebrated for its emotional depth and cinematic strength\, MOVING MOUNTAINS received top honors at the Tribeca x UNINTERRUPTED Film Festival\, selected personally by LeBron James\, Naomi Osaka\, and Joel Embiid. \n\n\n\n\nTHE MOTHER TO MY STYLE\nDirected by Cleon + Tre of Neighbors Skate Shop \nTHE MOTHER TO MY STYLE\, is a historic record of Leimert Park\, a unique and legendary south-central Los Angeles community that is a cradle of black-culture and pan-Afrikan energy. Leimert Park is the mother of a movement\, a sound\, and the identity of a community that is inevitably going to change. This film is a dialogue between the generations of the past\, the present and those to come. It’s a road map; it is a window to where we are coming from and a vision of where we are headed. \nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS:\nCleon and Tre are co-owners/co-founders of Neighbors Skate Shop a retail/community space located in the heart of the Crenshaw/West Adams districts in South Central Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture to commemorate the museum’s opening in 2016\, this 20-minute film looks at six significant events in African-American history that all occurred on August 28 in different years. ARRAY joins the Smithsonian’s nationwide 10-year anniversary celebration of the film directed by Ava DuVernay and starring Don Cheadle\, Regina King\, Angela Bassett and more. A filmmaker conversation with Ava DuVernay and friends will be hosted BEFORE this screening at 6:30PM.
