Newton. In addition to evincing Ms. Varda’s fascination with her adopted surroundings and her empathy\, this perceptive short is also a powerful political statement filmed during the summer of 1968. \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nAgnès Varda (1928–2019) was a Belgian-born\, Paris-based filmmaker known as a “godmother of the French New Wave\,” who created a unique\, mixed-media filmography of fiction\, documentaries and art installations. Starting as a photographer for a theater\, she directed her first film\, LA POINTE COURTE in 1954\, which ignited the New Wave movement. Ms. Varda’s influential career spanned over 60 years. \nScreenings of THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION (2015) and BLACK PANTHER (2018) are also included in the day’s program. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson weaves a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the diverse group of voices of the people who were there: police\, FBI informants\, journalists\, white supporters and detractors\, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. \nMPA Rating:\nNOT-RATED \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nStanley Nelson is the foremost chronicler of the African American experience working in nonfiction film today. His documentary films\, many of which have aired on PBS\, combine compelling narratives with rich and deeply researched historical detail\, shining new light on both familiar and under-explored aspects of the American past. A MacArthur “Genius” Fellow\, Nelson was awarded a Peabody for his body of work in 2016. He has received numerous honors over the course of his career\, including the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts Sciences. In 2013\, President Barack Obama presented Nelson with the National Medal in the Humanities. Mr. Nelson has directed and produced numerous acclaimed films\, including FREEDOM SUMMER\, FREEDOM RIDERS\, JONESTOWN: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PEOPLES TEMPLES and THE MURDER OF EMMETT TILL. He is also co-founder and executive director of Firelight Media\, which provides support to emerging documentarians. \nScreenings of BLACK PANTHER (2015) and BLACK PANTHERS (1968) are also included in the day’s program. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears\, T’Challa’s mettle as king — and as Black Panther — gets tested when he’s drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger\, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people. \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nRyan Coogler is an acclaimed American director\, screenwriter\, and producer known for films like FRUITVALE STATION\, CREED\, Marvel blockbusters BLACK PANTHER and BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER and most recently\, SINNERS. He earned a finance degree at CSU Sacramento and later studied at the USC School of Cinematic Arts\, where his short films gained recognition.
