SUMMARY:SAMBIZANGA (1972)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Week 2 of ARRAY360 at A WOMAN’S WORK a triple screening showcase of women made film gems. \nEVENT SCHEDULE\n2:00 PM | Guest Check-in Begins\n3:00 PM | Feature Film presentation:SAMBIZANGA (1972) (Run Time: 1h 27m) \nABOUT THE FILM\nBased on a true story\, SAMBIZANGA follows young resistance leader Domingos Xavier whose arrest by the Portuguese authorities helps ignite an anti-colonialist uprising and leads his determined wife Maria on an epic journey by foot to save him. \nMPA Rating:\nNOT-RATED \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nSarah Maldoror (1929–2020) was a visionary French filmmaker of Guadeloupean descent whose radical films helped define anti-colonial and Pan-African cinema. Born Sarah Ducados in southwestern France\, she later adopted the name Maldoror from the surrealist text LES CHANTS DE MALDOROR as an act of artistic self-definition. She began her creative journey in Parisian theater\, co-founding Les Griots in 1956\, the first troupe of exclusively Black and Caribbean actors in France. Driven by a commitment to revolutionary storytelling\, Ms. Maldoror studied filmmaking at the Moscow Film Academy\, where she trained alongside emerging African directors including Ousmane Sembène. \nUpon returning\, she worked as assistant director on THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (1966) before launching her own directing career in Africa. Her acclaimed films MONANGAMBÉE (1969) and SAMBIZANGA (1972) boldly portrayed liberation movements and the lived realities of colonized peoples. Working outside traditional systems\, Ms. Maldoror created a distinctly transnational body of work\, earning her the title “matriarch of African cinema.” Across more than two dozen films\, she used cinema as a tool of resistance\, love and liberation. \nScreenings of MAURI (1988) and THE CURSE OF QUON GWON (1916) are also included in the day’s program. Please note: Each film screening will have a separate ticketed entry. Guests must RSVP and possess a ticket for each film in order to attend any of the three film screenings.

The story is set among the colourful characters of a once thriving settlement\, Te Mata\, upon whom the encroachment by Europeans spells disaster. Now isolated by lack of numbers\, time and distance\, the remaining survivors form a tight-knit community which outsiders find impenetrable. Her influence extended beyond New Zealand through her work in the United States where she taught and mentored a new generation of Indigenous filmmakers. Ms. Mita’s legacy\, honored in her son’s film MERATA: HOW MUM DECOLONIZED THE SCREEN\, continues to inspire storytellers to center multi-faceted Indigenous perspectives and push for creative independence. \nScreenings of THE CURSE OF QUON GWON (1916) and SAMBIZANGA (1972) are also included in the day’s program. SUMMARY:THE CURSE OF QUON GWON (1916)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Week 2 of ARRAY360 at A WOMAN’S WORK a triple screening showcase of women made film gems. \nEVENT SCHEDULE\n11:30 PM | Guest Check-in Begins\n12:00 PM | Feature Film presentation: THE CURSE OF QUON GWON (1916) (Run Time: 35m) \nABOUT THE FILM\nThe members of a Chinese family living in the U.S. have a curse put upon them for becoming too “westernized.” \nTHE CURSE OF QUON GWON is preserved by and provided courtesy of the Academy Film Archive. \nMPA Rating:\nNOT-RATED \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nMarion Wong (1895–1970) was a visionary filmmaker who broke new ground as the first known Asian American to write\, direct\, produce and star in a motion picture. At just 21\, with only a third-grade formal education\, she founded the Mandarin Film Company in Oakland\, California in 1916 and created THE CURSE OF QUON GWON: WHEN THE FAR EAST MINGLES WITH THE WEST. This silent film explores cultural identity and the complexities of assimilation. With Hollywood’s marginalization of people of color\, Ms. Wong offered an authentic portrayal of Chinese American life\, defying racial and gender barriers. Though her film was never commercially released and nearly lost to history\, Ms. Wong’s work stands as a landmark achievement and cements her legacy as a pioneer in both Asian American and independent cinema. \nScreenings of MAURI (1988) and SAMBIZANGA (1972) are also included in the day’s program. Please note: Each film screening will have a separate ticketed entry. Guests must RSVP and possess a ticket for each film in order to attend any of the three film screenings.

SUMMARY:Liberated Lit: Film Adaptations for Banned Books Week | MALCOLM X (1992)
DESCRIPTION:Do something for Banned Books Week and join ARRAY at our Liberated Lit screening series. This day-long screening series celebrates the work of authors whose banned or contested literature has been adapted for the screen. Based on the book\, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X\,” the film chronicles the life of the civil rights activist from his youth to his assassination in 1965 and stars Denzel Washington. \nEVENT SCHEDULE\n4:30 PM| Guest Check-in Begins for MALCOLM X\n5:30 PM | Feature film presentation begins (Run Time: 3h\, 22m)\n9:00 PM | Screening Ends \nScreenings of THE OUTSIDERS and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN are also included in the day’s program. Please note: Each film screening will have a separate ticketed entry. Guests must RSVP and possess a ticket for each film in order to attend any of the three film screenings. \nMPA Rating:\nR | For language\, violence\, sex & nudity\, drugs\, alcohol\, smoking \n \nAbout The Author \n\nWords from Malcolm X: “I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me. I knew right there\, in prison\, that reading had changed forever the course of my life.” \nMalcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19\, 1925 in Omaha\, Nebraska. His mother was the national recording secretary for the Marcus Garvey Movement which commanded millions of followers in the 1920s and 30s. His father was a Baptist minister and chapter president of The Universal Negro Improvement Association who appealed to President Hoover that Marcus Garvey was wrongfully arrested. Earl’s civil rights activism prompted death threats from the white supremacist organization Black Legion\, forcing the family to relocate twice before Malcolm’s fourth birthday. \nRegardless of the Little’s efforts to elude the Legion\, in 1929 their Lansing\, Michigan home was burned to the ground. Two years later\, Earl’s body was found lying across the town’s trolley tracks. \nPolice ruled both incidents as accidents\, but the Little’s were certain that members of the Black Legion were responsible. Louise suffered emotional breakdown several years after the death of her husband and was committed to a mental institution. Her children were split up amongst various foster homes and orphanages. \nEventually Malcolm and his buddy\, Malcolm “Shorty” Jarvis\, moved back to Boston. In 1946 they were arrested and convicted on burglary charges\, and Malcolm was sentenced to 10 years in prison. (He was paroled after serving seven years.) Recalling his days in school\, he used the time to further his education. It was during this period of self-enlightenment that Malcolm’s brother Reginald would visit and discuss his recent conversion to the Muslim religion. Reginald belonged to the religious organization the Nation of Islam (NOI). \nIntrigued\, Malcolm began to study the teachings of NOI leader Elijah Muhammad. Muhammad taught that white society actively worked to keep African-Americans from empowering themselves and achieving political\, economic and social success. Among other goals\, the NOI fought for a state of their own\, separate from one inhabited by white people. By the time he was paroled in 1952\, Malcolm was a devoted follower with the new surname “X.” (He considered “Little” a slave name and chose the “X” to signify his lost tribal name.) \nIntelligent and articulate\, Malcolm was appointed as a minister and national spokesman for the Nation of Islam. Elijah Muhammad also charged him with establishing new mosques in cities such as Detroit\, Michigan and Harlem\, New York. Malcolm utilized newspaper columns\, as well as radio and television to communicate the NOI’s message across the United States. His charisma\, drive and conviction attracted an astounding number of new members. Malcolm was largely credited with increasing membership in the NOI from 500 in 1952 to 30\,000 in 1963. \nThe crowds and controversy surrounding Malcolm made him a media magnet. He was featured in a week-long television special with Mike Wallace in 1959\, called “The Hate That Hate Produced.” The program explored the fundamentals of the NOI\, and tracked Malcolm’s emergence as one of its most important leaders. After the special\, Malcolm was faced with the uncomfortable reality that his fame had eclipsed that of his mentor Elijah Muhammad. Racial tensions ran increasingly high during the early 1960s. In addition to the media\, Malcolm’s vivid personality had captured the government’s attention. As membership in the NOI continued to grow\, FBI agents infiltrated the organization (one even acted as Malcolm’s bodyguard) and secretly placed bugs\, wiretaps\, cameras and other surveillance equipment to monitor the group’s activities. \nMalcolm’s faith was dealt a crushing blow at the height of the civil rights movement in 1963. He learned that his mentor and leader\, Elijah Muhammad\, was secretly having relations with as many as six women within the Nation of Islam organization. As if that were not enough\, Malcolm found out that some of these relationships had resulted in children. \nSince joining the NOI\, Malcolm had strictly adhered to the teachings of Muhammad – which included remaining celibate until his marriage to Betty Shabazz in 1958. Malcolm refused Muhammad’s request to help cover up the affairs and subsequent children. He was deeply hurt by the deception of Muhammad\, whom he had considered a living prophet. Malcolm also felt guilty about the masses he had led to join the NOI\, which he now felt was a fraudulent organization built on too many lies to ignore. \nShortly after his shocking discovery\, Malcolm received criticism for a comment he made regarding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. “[Kennedy] never foresaw that the chickens would come home to roost so soon\,” said Malcolm. After the statement\, Elijah Muhammad “silenced” Malcolm for 90 days. Malcolm\, however\, suspected he was silenced for another reason. In March 1964 Malcolm terminated his relationship with the NOI. Unable to look past Muhammad’s deception\, Malcolm decided to found his own religious organization\, the Muslim Mosque\, Inc.\nThat same year\, Malcolm went on a pilgrimage to Mecca\, Saudi Arabia. The trip proved life altering. For the first time\, Malcolm shared his thoughts and beliefs with different cultures\, and found the response to be overwhelmingly positive. When he returned\, Malcolm said he had met “blonde-haired\, blued-eyed men I could call my brothers.” He returned to the United States with a new outlook on integration and a new hope for the future. This time when Malcolm spoke\, instead of just preaching to African-Americans\, he had a message for all races. \nAfter Malcolm resigned his position in the Nation of Islam and renounced Elijah Muhammad\, relations between the two had become increasingly volatile. FBI informants working undercover in the NOI warned officials that Malcolm had been marked for assassination. (One undercover officer had even been ordered to help plant a bomb in Malcolm’s car).\nAfter repeated attempts on his life\, Malcolm rarely traveled anywhere without bodyguards. On February 14\, 1965 the home where Malcolm\, Betty and their four daughters lived in East Elmhurst\, New York was firebombed. Luckily\, the family escaped physical injury. \nOne week later\, however\, Malcolm’s enemies were successful in their ruthless attempt. At a speaking engagement in the Manhattan’s Audubon Ballroom on February 21\, 1965 three gunmen rushed Malcolm onstage. They shot him 15 times at close range. The 39-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at New York’s Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.\nFifteen hundred people attended Malcolm’s funeral in Harlem on February 27\, 1965 at the Faith Temple Church of God in Christ (now Child’s Memorial Temple Church of God in Christ). After the ceremony\, friends took the shovels away from the waiting gravediggers and buried Malcolm themselves. \nLater that year\, Betty gave birth to their twin daughters. Malcolm’s assassins\, Talmadge Hayer\, Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson were convicted of first-degree murder in March 1966. The three men were all members of the Nation of Islam. She graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Vermont in 1969\, earning a bachelor’s degree in History. After graduation\, Proulx continued her studies\, completing a master’s degree and beginning a doctorate at Concordia University. As a graduate student\, she published a number of fiction stories in Seventeen. Proulx left academia before completing her doctorate\, turning instead to nonfiction writing. Proulx’s first published books were practical manuals on how to grow fruits and vegetables\, make cider\, and build fences. During this time\, Proulx also founded\, wrote\, and edited The Vershire Behind The Times\, a local newspaper for her small town in Vermont. \nIn 1988\, Proulx made her literary debut with her first short story collection\, Heart Songs and Other Stories\, which explores the lives of rural\, small town America\, a topic she frequently returns to. Proulx quickly followed up her short story collection with her debut novel\, Postcards. In 1992\, Postcards won the 13th Annual PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction\, making Proulx the first woman to receive the prestigious award. One year later\, Proulx’s second novel\, The Shipping News\, earned the Pulitzer Prize\, the National Book Award\, and The Irish Times International Fiction Prize. With her short story collections\, Close Range: Wyoming Stories; Bad Dirt:Wyoming Stories 2; and Fine Just the Way It Is: Wyoming Stories 3\, Proulx has dedicated herself to presenting readers with a powerful\, introspective glimpse at life in the rural west. In 1997\, Proulx’s short story\, “Brokeback Mountain\,” centered around two cowboys who develop a secret\, powerful\, life-long bond\, was published in The New Yorker\, earning her a National Magazine Award and the first of two O. Henry Awards. In 2005\, “Brokeback Mountain” was adapted into an Academy Award winning film that Rolling Stone named one of the top 10 films of the decade. \nIn 2011\, Proulx published her memoir\, Birdcloud: A Memoir of Place\, which provided readers with an astonishing window to Proulx’s remarkable connection with the American west. Best known for her evocative fiction about rural America\, Proulx’s writing has an impressive lyricism and wit that captivates readers of all ages. Proulx has received honorary doctorate degrees from Concordia University and the Universities of Maine\, Toronto\, Vermont\, and Montreal. (Source: National Book Foundation)

SUMMARY:Liberated Lit: Film Adaptations for Banned Books Week | THE OUTSIDERS (1983)
DESCRIPTION:Do something for Banned Books Week and join ARRAY at our Liberated Lit screening series. This day-long screening series celebrates the work of authors whose banned or contested literature has been adapted for the screen. We’re kicking off our day with the film adaptation of the S.E. Hinton novel\, THE OUTSIDERS starring Patrick Swayze\, Tom Cruise and Matt Dillon. The story follows a working class teen gang in rural Oklahoma as they navigate the ups and downs of a rivalry with the town’s more affluent gang. \nLearn more about the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week initiative at www.ala.org/bbooks. \nEVENT SCHEDULE\n11:00 AM| Guest Check-in Begins for THE OUTSIDERS\n12:00 PM | Feature film presentation begins (Run Time: 1h\, 30m)\n1:30 PM | Screening Ends\n1:45 PM | Conversation with President of the American Library Association and local independent bookstore owners \nScreenings of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and MALCOLM X are also included in the day’s program. Please note: Each film screening will have a separate ticketed entry. Guests must RSVP and possess a ticket for each film in order to attend any of the three film screenings. Guests registered for this screening will have access to the Liberated Lit conversation featuring Cindy Hohl\, President of the American Library Association and local independent bookstore owners Nikki High and Chris Capizzi about the importance of access to books of all kinds and creating communities where books and reading are embraced. Moderated by Tammy Garnes\, VP of Education and Understanding\, ARRAY.\n \nMPA Rating:\nPG | For language\, violence\, sex & nudity\, drugs\, alcohol\, smoking \nAbout the Author \nWords from S.E. Hinton: “I read constantly\, and occasionally take a class at the university not for credit— it’s more fun when you don’t have to take the tests!” \nSusan Eloise Hinton was born in Tulsa\, Oklahoma. She has always enjoyed reading but wasn’t satisfied with the literature that was being written for young adults\, which influenced her to write novels like The Outsiders. That book\, her first novel written while in high school\, was published in 1967 by Viking. \nOnce published\, The Outsiders gave her a lot of publicity and fame\, and also a lot of pressure. S.E. Hinton was becoming known as “The Voice of the Youth” among other titles. This kind of pressure and publicity resulted in a three year long writer’s block. Her boyfriend (and now\, her husband)\, who had gotten sick of her being depressed all the time\, eventually broke this block. He made her write two pages a day if she wanted to go anywhere. This eventually led to That Was Then\, This Is Now\, published in 1971. Other notable novels written by Ms. Hinton includes Rumble Fish and Tex. (Source: Official Site)
