SUMMARY:MAURI (1988)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Week 2 of ARRAY360 at A WOMAN’S WORK a triple screening showcase of women made film gems. \nEVENT SCHEDULE\n12:00 PM | Guest Check-in Begins\n1:00 PM | Feature Film Presentation:MAURI (1988) (Run Time: 1h 40m) \nABOUT THE FILM\nMAURI is the story of Rewi\, a man haunted by a past which threatens to engulf his future. The story is set among the colourful characters of a once thriving settlement\, Te Mata\, upon whom the encroachment by Europeans spells disaster. Now isolated by lack of numbers\, time and distance\, the remaining survivors form a tight-knit community which outsiders find impenetrable. Rewi’s deceit forces him to become part of that community and his life is inextricably interwoven with those around him. \nMPA Rating:\nNOT-RATED \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nMerata Mita (1941–2010) was a trailblazing Māori filmmaker\, activist and mentor whose work transformed the landscape of Indigenous cinema. Born in Maketu\, North Island and of Ngāti Pikiao and Ngāi Te Rangi descent\, she was the first Māori woman and the first Indigenous woman in the world to write and direct a feature film with MAURI (1988). Through powerful documentaries like PATU!\, which captured the anti-apartheid protests in Aotearoa\, Ms. Mita gave voice to Māori struggles and sovereignty\, using film as a tool for resistance and cultural reclamation. Her influence extended beyond New Zealand through her work in the United States where she taught and mentored a new generation of Indigenous filmmakers. Ms. Mita’s legacy\, honored in her son’s film MERATA: HOW MUM DECOLONIZED THE SCREEN\, continues to inspire storytellers to center multi-faceted Indigenous perspectives and push for creative independence. \nScreenings of THE CURSE OF QUON GWON (1916) and SAMBIZANGA (1972) are also included in the day’s program. Please note: Each film screening will have a separate ticketed entry. Guests must RSVP and possess a ticket for each film in order to attend any of the three film screenings.
