DESCRIPTION:Join us for Week 2 of ARRAY360 at A WOMAN’S WORK a triple screening showcase of women made film gems. \nEVENT SCHEDULE\n11:30 PM | Guest Check-in Begins\n12:00 PM | Feature Film presentation: THE CURSE OF QUON GWON (1916) (Run Time: 35m) \nABOUT THE FILM\nThe members of a Chinese family living in the U.S. have a curse put upon them for becoming too “westernized.” \nTHE CURSE OF QUON GWON is preserved by and provided courtesy of the Academy Film Archive. \nMPA Rating:\nNOT-RATED \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nMarion Wong (1895–1970) was a visionary filmmaker who broke new ground as the first known Asian American to write\, direct\, produce and star in a motion picture. At just 21\, with only a third-grade formal education\, she founded the Mandarin Film Company in Oakland\, California in 1916 and created THE CURSE OF QUON GWON: WHEN THE FAR EAST MINGLES WITH THE WEST. This silent film explores cultural identity and the complexities of assimilation. With Hollywood’s marginalization of people of color\, Ms. Wong offered an authentic portrayal of Chinese American life\, defying racial and gender barriers. Though her film was never commercially released and nearly lost to history\, Ms. Wong’s work stands as a landmark achievement and cements her legacy as a pioneer in both Asian American and independent cinema. \nScreenings of MAURI (1988) and SAMBIZANGA (1972) are also included in the day’s program. Please note: Each film screening will have a separate ticketed entry. Guests must RSVP and possess a ticket for each film in order to attend any of the three film screenings.
